Today, May 10, marks the second anniversary of the Puget Sound No Discharge Zone, which is a common sense solution that requires all vessels to store sewage onboard and use pump out stations around the Sound where sewage can be properly treated.

For the past several years, the American Waterways Operators (AWO) have spent considerable effort in Washington, D.C., to undermine the No Discharge Zone.

Don’t repeal the Puget Sound No Discharge Zone

Dear EPA,

May 10 marks the second anniversary of the Puget Sound No Discharge Zone. While we in Washington State are celebrating our collective effort to recover the Salish Sea one step at a time, unfortunately your Administration is undermining clean water investments by trying to repeal the No Discharge Zone designation.

For years, the American Waterways Operators (AWO), on behalf of American Cruise Lines, Foss Maritime, Crowley Maritime Corporation, and others, fought tooth and nail to oppose common-sense measures to keep the Salish Sea clean and free of partially treated wastewater even though the state worked diligently to address their concerns. Your agency did its job properly and did nothing more than check the math that enough pumpouts exist. The math has not changed, yet your Administration is attempting to rollback these protections.

Puget Sound residents and users have strongly expressed our support to designate the No Discharge Zone for Puget Sound. All vessels must do their part to keep our waters clean, and the vast majority of recreational boaters already do. We know the maritime community values Puget Sound, and many vessels already do the right thing.

EPA has approved dozens of No Discharge Zones across the country. This simple and common sense approach will protect public health, keep our waters clean, protect sensitive marine waters, and support important shellfish harvesting areas in Puget Sound.

I urge you to stop AWO’s underhanded attempts to dismantle a very popular, common sense measure for a clean and healthy Puget Sound community.
